What is Reiki?
Reiki is universal, spiritually guided life force energy - It is the God-consciousness called Rei that guides the life force called Ki in the practice we call Reiki. Therefore, Reiki can be defined as spiritually guided life force energy. This is a meaningful interpretation of the word Reiki. It more closely describes the experience most people have of it; Reiki guiding itself with its own wisdom, and being unresponsive to the direction of the practitioner.

What Does the Word Reiki Mean?

Rei - Spiritual Wisdom
Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who introduced Reiki to the West, said the word Rei means universal and this is the definition most have accepted. However, Mrs. Takata also indicated that this interpretation is a very general one. The kanji ideograms have many levels of meaning. They vary from the mundane to the highly esoteric. So while it is true that Rei can be interpreted as universal, meaning that it is present everywhere, this level of interpretation really doesn't add to our understanding of Reiki.

Research into the esoteric meaning of the Japanese kanji character for Rei has given a much deeper understanding of this ideogram. The word Rei as it is used in Reiki is more accurately interpreted to mean supernatural knowledge or spiritual consciousness. This is the wisdom that comes from God or the Higher Self. This is the God-Consciousness which is all knowing. It understands each person completely. It knows the cause of all problems and difficulties and knows what to do to heal them.

Ki - The Life Force
Ki means the same as Chi in Chinese, Prana in Sanskrit and Ti or Ki in Hawaiian. It has also been called, odic force, orgone, and bioplasma. It has been given many other names by the various cultures that have been aware of it.

Ki is the life force. It is also called the vital life force or the universal life force. This is the nonphysical energy that animates all living things. As long as something is alive, it has life force circulating through it and surrounding it; when it dies, the life force departs. If your life force is low, or if there is a restriction in its flow, you will be more vulnerable to illness. When it is high, and flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick. Life force plays an important role in everything we do. It animates the body and also is the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts and spiritual life.

The Chinese place great importance on the life force or what they call Chi. They have studied it for thousands of years and have discovered there are many different kinds of Chi. The "Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine" which is over 4,000 years old, lists thirty-two different kinds of Chi or Ki.

Ki is used by martial artists in their physical training and mental development. It is used in meditative breathing exercises called Pranayama, and by the shamans of all cultures for divination, psychic awareness, manifestation and healing. Ki is the nonphysical energy used by all healers. Ki is present all around us and can be accumulated and guided by the mind.

What is it used for?

In a a word:  Everything.
Reiki is a truly holistic healing art with an incredibly expansive range. During a Reiki treatment, the energy may be correcting pain but it also seeks the original source of the illness; therefore, it heals more than just the physical body.

Since Reiki uses universal life force energy, the essence that creates and binds all forms of life, as its healing force. Universal life energy, by its very nature, is both effective and harmless when applied to any situation. Instead of creating a specific predetermined effect, like a medicine or massage technique might, Reiki changes whatever is necessary to restore the unbalanced life force energy of the patient.

If those changes need to occur both physically and emotionally, for example, then the patient will change and benefit in both areas. Usually, the healing takes place on all levels.

Universal life force energy and Reiki are non-invasive, since benefits occur without ever physically entering or manipulating the patient's body. Because of this, Reiki can be safely added to current regimens without changing the course of treatment. There are no drug interactions or negative side effects as with some conventional therapies.

Reiki is perfect for stress management because it is so soothing it encourages the relaxation response. A relaxed body may heal faster -- relaxation alone may encourage the non-physical aspects of the body to rest and heal in conjunction with the physical body.

Does the Reiki Practitioner Touch Me?
There are no restrictions to the way Reiki can be implemented. A Reiki practitioner can direct universal life energy to wherever it is needed by using either "hands on" contact or by placing the hands above the target. The hands can be stationary or they can move freely in any direction.

The hands themselves aren't even necessary. The practitioner can direct healing energy from across the room, or across the planet with nothing more than focused intention or thought. This means Reiki can be used in any way a practitioner needs in order to offer healing energy for benefit.

Reiki can be used in any situation, in any manner. All things, animate and inanimate, are made of universal life energy. An unbalanced flow of life energy creates illness; balancing and restoring the flow of life energy creates healing. Channeling universal life force energy (using Reiki) will balance and restore the flow of life energy. It follows that Reiki restores and heals everything, safely and easily. What more could be asked of a natural healing technique?

Is Reiki a Religion?
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

While Reiki is not a religion, for optimum well being in the light of Eastern medical theory that we are a mind-body-spirit unity, it is necessary to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.

  How Does Reiki Heal?
We are alive because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras and meridians. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.

Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.

  How Does Reiki Work?
Your Reiki practitioner will want you to begin by simply experiencing Reiki. You may be encouraged to ask questions, but the focus will be on letting you actually experience the energy.

Most professional practitioners offer a short introductory experience at little or no charge. Here's why:

How Many Reiki Treatments Will It Take?
Reiki’s effects are cumulative. It often takes multiple sessions to reach the intended healing point and the body must have time between sessions to process the healing at each level.

The number of sessions should be closely related to the length of time you have been dealing with whatever condition brought you to Reiki. A condition that you have had for a year or more could take three to six months of weekly or bi-monthly Reiki sessions. Something that has been with you for a month or two could take two, three or four sessions during a 21- to 45-day cycle. These numbers are offered for illustration, and do not at all reflect an absolute standard.

Your practitioner may recommend that you experience a cluster of sessions at significant points during the healing process. It is a common practice within Reiki to space three sessions out over a very short period of time (e.g., one to three days) in cases of greater need. This is done to activate or accelerate the healing cycle of the energy system. The two most common times to undergo a cluster of sessions are at the beginning of the healing work or during a critical point in the healing process, often referred to as healing crisis.

  What is Healing Crisis?
Healing crisis is a phenomenon found in many natural healing modalities. One example is the reappearance of prior symptoms, sometimes stronger than before. Another example is when emotional or mental reactions begin to fill the individual's awareness after experiencing relief from physical symptoms.

Why does healing crisis take place? After having successfully balanced the external (or physical) elements of the energy system, the healing moves into the more subtle internal systems -- the emotional and spiritual bodies. This causes the physical manifestations of the original imbalance to reappear as the body addresses the cause of symptoms at a deeper level.

Healing crisis is a short-lived event in virtually every case, but it is not part of every Reiki experience. It takes place for some, but many people experience no such reaction during the course of their work. It is important that you discuss any questions you have about this with your Reiki practitioner before and during the course of treatment with Reiki.

Can I Heal Myself With Reiki?
Yes, and you may decide to receive Reiki training. Reiki’s first priority is self-healing, and its practitioners are encouraged to use Reiki on themselves daily.

Practicing Reiki on your own will accelerate the work you and your practitioner are doing, progressively minimizing the number of sessions you receive. It also will provide you a valuable after-treatment skill.

By doing the work on yourself daily, you will be taking a very active role in your own healing. And that, above all things, is the most beneficial step in any alternative therapy.

Becoming responsible for your own healing will produce optimum results.

  Do All Healers Use Reiki?
All healers use life force or Ki, but not all use Reiki. Reiki is a special kind of life force that can only be channeled by someone that has been attuned to it. It is possible that some people are born with Reiki or have gotten it some other way.

Can Reiki be Used to Cause Harm?
Because Reiki is guided by the God-consciousness, it can never do harm. It always knows what a person needs and will adjust itself to create the effect that is appropriate for them. One never need worry about whether to give Reiki or not. It is always helpful.

In addition, because the practitioner does not direct the healing and does not decide what to work on, or what to heal, the practitioner is not in danger of taking on the karma of the client. Because the practitioner is not doing the healing, it is also much easier for the ego to stay out of the way and allow the presence of God to clearly shine through.
