Reiki Overview
The belief that an intelligent, although unseen energy, flows throughout the universe and connects all living things is ancient wisdom; and held worldwide by many cultures.  The existence of an unseen life force energy and its direct connection to the quality of our health and well being is being verified by scientific experiments and growing numbers of medical professionals are considering the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process.

Reiki is a holistic energy therapy. More and more hospitals, as well as chiropractors, nurses, massage therapists, hypnotists, and health care providers of every description have discovered the value of including this ancient and effective modality to their practices.

Reiki is a natural adjunct to traditional as well as all other treatment modalities for pain management, stress reduction and the stimulation of the body's immune system.  The Japanese word, Reiki means "universal life force energy".  It is a powerful, yet gentle, method of healing through opening, clearing and balancing of one's energy system.

Reiki treatments can reduce the negative side effects of traditional drug and radiation therapies and promotes the effectiveness of treatments. The healing of emotional traumas can be accelerated with Reiki.  Anything benefited by improved internal energy flow, can be improved through the use of Reiki.

Reiki is simple to learn.  Reiki is both taught to and transferred to the student by the Reiki Master. It's not dependent on one's intellectual capacity or spiritual development or religious beliefs and, therefore, is available to everyone. It has been taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.

Reiki healing is  similar to Therapeutic Touch , a "hands on"  healing technique,  with the exception that with Reiki you need to receive sacred attunements through your Reiki Master (teacher).  Reiki, unlike "hands on" healing,  does not require touching to transfer the energy. In a typical Reiki treatment, the hands of the practitioner are often held several inches away from the receiver.  The mutual intention of both giver and receiver is far more important than actual physical touch.  The hands are often held over the chakras (the seven energy centers) of the receiver, but need not be restricted to the chakras.

You as the receiver, must accept responsibility for your own healing and take an active part in it. Therefore, the Usui system of Reiki is more than the use of, or passing of, the Reiki energy.  It is an exchange of mutual intention.

A Reiki treatment feels like a wonderful, glowing radiance that flows through you and surrounds you.  Reiki treats the whole person, (body, mind and spirit) and creates many beneficial effects including relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and well-being.  Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use and benefit by.  For information about an appointment to receive a  please call the toll free number below or inquire by email.

Reiki is More Than Healing
It is a process of continual growth.  Seek to develop and express the qualities of love, compassion, wisdom, justice, cooperation, humility, persistence, kindness, courage, strength, and abundance. Reiki energy is all of these and more.

There is more to Reiki than healing yourself and/or others of specific problems.  Reiki has a deeper purpose.  In the same way that Reiki is able to guide healing energy when you are giving a treatment, Reiki can guide your life.

By treating yourself and others, and meditating on the essence of Reiki,  you will be guided more and more by Reiki in making important decisions. By living the Reiki principles, trusting in the guidance of Reiki, and by humbly surrendering to Reiki's loving power, your life will change in ways that bring greater harmony. Over time, you will learn from experience that the guidance of Reiki is worthy of your trust.

The Three Degrees of Reiki

Reiki I:
After instruction and having received the first attunement, the new Reiki practitioner has been prepared to offer the energy transfer.

Reiki II:
At this level, the training is more involved and the student receives the Reiki symbols with the second attunement.  The practitioner is also now able to perform remote Reiki.

Reiki III/Reiki Master:
Upon receiving the third attunement, the practitioner's knowledge and skills are expanded and intensified.   The student receives instruction on how to pass the attunements; and guidance on how to use and transfer power and sacred symbols as a Reiki Master/Teacher.

The Three Precepts of Reiki

  • The receiver must take responsibility for their own healing.
  • The Reiki practitioner must always get permission to give Reiki.
  • An equal exchange should take place.

The Reiki Principles:

Several years after developing Reiki, during a meditation, Dr. Usui decided to add the Reiki principles (or ideals) to the practice of Reiki. They were derived, at least in part,  from the five principles of the Meiji emperor of Japan whom Dr. Usui admired. These ideals were added to develop spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. The principles help one realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve one's 'self' is necessary to the "BEing" in the Reiki healing experience.

The principles are the heart of Reiki; but they also serve well as guidelines or ideals for living a gracious life. If you think about it, the world itself would be healed on the whole, if every individual lived these simple Reiki principles. As such, they are virtues worthy of practice by all, whether they practice Reiki or not, for their inherent value:

The secret art of inviting happiness...
The miraculous medicine of all diseases:

For today only, Anger not
Worry not
Be grateful and humble
Do your work with honesty
Be kind to all

Every morning and evening, join your hands in Gassho
Pray these words to your heart
and chant these words with your mouth

The Usui Reiki Method
to change your mind and body for the better

Seeking a Teacher / Becoming a Reiki Master
When seeking a Reiki Master from whom to receive the Master training and attunement, it is important to ask exactly what to expect.  Will you receive the complete training and be able to initiate others into all the degrees including full Reiki Master?

Becoming a Reiki Master is a serious undertaking. First, you must receive Reiki I and II training and attunements,  and have practical experience as a Reiki practitioner. Second, you must meditate on your purpose and intent, and decide if Reiki Mastership is in harmony with it. Third, find a Reiki Master to study with who is genuine and competent; and with whom you feel rapport; one who will support you after your attunement.

Becoming a Reiki Master implies that you will be able to initiate or attune others into Reiki. Therefore, it is important to find a teacher who will spend time in class helping you practice the attunement process.

What is Reiki?
Reiki is universal, spiritually guided life force energy - It is the God consciousness called Rei that guides the life force called Ki in the practice we call Reiki. Therefore, Reiki can be defined as spiritually guided life force energy. Reiki guides itself with its own wisdom,  unresponsive to the direction of the practitioner.

What Does the Word Reiki Mean?

Rei - Spiritual Wisdom
Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who introduced Reiki to the US, taught us that the word Rei means universal and this is the definition most have accepted. However, Mrs. Takata also indicated that this interpretation is a very general one. The kanji ideograms have many levels of meaning varying from the mundane to the highly esoteric.

Research into the esoteric meaning of the Japanese kanji character for Rei has brought forth a much deeper understanding of it. The word Rei as it is used in Reiki is more accurately interpreted to mean "supernatural knowledge" or "spiritual consciousness". The  wisdom that comes from God or the Higher Self. God consciousness is all knowing, it understands each person completely. It knows the cause of all the problems and and knows how to heal them.

Ki - The Life Force
Ki means the same as Chi in Chinese, Prana in Sanskrit and Ti or Ki in Hawaiian. It has also been referred to as odic force, orgone, and bioplasma. It has been given many other names by the various cultures that have been aware of it.

Ki is the life force, vital life force, or the universal life force. This is the nonphysical, seemingly intangible, energy that animates all living things. As long as something is alive, it has life force circulating through it and surrounding it; when it dies, the life force departs. When your life force is low, or if there is a restriction in its flow, you're more vulnerable to illness. When it is high, and flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick. Life force animates the body, it is the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts and spirituality.

Ki is used by martial artists in their physical training and mental development. It is used in meditative breathing exercises called Pranayama, and by the shamans of all cultures for divination, psychic awareness, manifestation and healing. Ki is the nonphysical energy used by all healers. Ki is present all around us and can be accumulated and guided by the mind.

What is Reiki used for?
In a word:  Everything!  Reiki is a healing and enlightenment art with an incredibly expansive range. During a Reiki treatment, the energy may be correcting pain but it also seeks the original source of the illness; therefore, it heals more than just the physical body.

Reiki uses universal life force energy, the essence that creates and binds all forms of life, as its healing force, it is both effective and harmless when applied to any situation. Instead of creating a specific predetermined effect, like a medicine or massage technique might, Reiki changes whatever is necessary to restore the unbalanced life force energy of the receiver. If changes need to occur both physically and emotionally, then the receiver will change and benefit in both areas. Healing can take place on all levels.

Universal life force energy and Reiki are non-invasive. without ever physically entering or manipulating the patient's body. So, Reiki can be safely added to any medical regimen without changing the course of treatment. There are no drug interactions or negative side effects.

Reiki is "key" to stress management because it is so soothing it encourages the relaxation response. A relaxed body heals faster.

Does the Reiki Practitioner Touch Me?
A Reiki practitioner can direct the energy by using either "hands on" contact or by placing the hands slightly above the body. The hands can be still or they can move freely in any direction.  In truth, touching is not necessary. We can direct healing energy from across the room, or across the earth with focused intention.

Reiki can be used in any situation, in any manner. All things, animate and inanimate, are made of universal life energy. An unbalanced flow of life energy creates illness; balancing and restoring the flow of life energy creates healing. "Channeling universal life force energy" or using Reiki will balance and restore the flow of life energy. It follows that Reiki promotes restoration and healing to everything, safely and easily.

Is Reiki a Religion?
No, Reiki is not a religion, but it is spiritual in nature.  Reiki is not dependent on any particular belief.  Yet it holds true, that because Reiki is in the divine scheme of the universe, many people find that it puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion.

The fact that every human being is a being of mind-body-spirit unity, we thrive and heal when we live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr.  Usui recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are universal throughout all cultures.

How Does Reiki Heal?
We are alive because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras and meridians. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.

Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.

How Does Reiki Work?
Begin by simply experiencing Reiki. Ask questions, but the focus is on actually experiencing the energy.  You must decide for yourself about how Reiki works for you. You cannot decide that based on your research; you must experience it.

How Many Reiki Treatments Will I Need?
Reiki’s effects are cumulative. It often takes multiple sessions and the body must have time between sessions to process the healing at each level.

The number of sessions necessary is often related to the length of time you have had the  condition brought you to Reiki. A condition that you've had for a year or more could take three to six months of weekly or bi-monthly Reiki sessions. Sometimes a condition that has been with you for a month or two could take two, three or four sessions during a 21 to 45 day period. Each individual is unique and must be treated accordingly.

To accelerate the healing cycle of the energy system, it is often recommended that you experience a cluster of sessions at significant points during the healing process.

It's common to space three sessions over a very short period of time, every (one to three days) in cases of greater need. The two most common times to undergo a cluster of sessions are at the beginning of the healing work or during a critical point in the healing process, often referred to as healing crisis.

Can I Heal Myself With Reiki?
Yes, Reiki’s first priority is self-healing, and practitioners are encouraged to use Reiki on themselves daily.

By doing the work on yourself daily, you take an active role in your own healing. And that is a crucial step in healing.  Becoming responsible for your own healing produces optimum results.

Are All Healers Reiki practitioners?
All healers use life force or Ki, but not all use Reiki. Reiki can only be channeled by someone that has been attuned to it.

Can Reiki Cause Harm?
Because Reiki is guided by the God consciousness, it can do no harm.  One never need worry about whether to give Reiki or not. It is always right.  Because the practitioner does not direct the healing, or what to heal, there's no danger of taking on any negative energy of the receiver.

Disclaimer

Reiki can be used entirely on it's own, but it is not meant as a substitute for medical, or psychological, diagnosis and treatment.  In fact it can readily compliment any form of therapy.

Reiki practitioners do not diagnose conditions, nor do they perform medical treatment, prescribe substances, or interfere with the treatment of a licensed medical professional, unless they have received training in such a licensed professional practice that supports this.  (These professional skills are not part of a Reiki training program).

Reiki should not compete with medical doctors and their treatments.

Reiki can be used together with any other form of medical, natural or alternative therapy in order to compliment it.

Note: It is recommended you see a licensed physician or mental health care professional for medical or psychological ailments.
